High Infant Mortality

This is the third post of my design process. It includes phase 3 of problem analysis.

http://menonanamika.blogspot.in/p/design-process-phase-3-part-1.html

Situation Visualization

Good to see new posts. Though overall visit to the page have gone down. As I was speaking today here are some examples of visualization. As I said before design process is systems thinking, its unnecessary to see them separately.

This is a case when the task was to visualize how we could build rural support system combining livelihood and leaning. The following models are basic drawn out maps of institutions involved and primary responsibilities. The visualization of course had to happen keeping the rural issues of livelihood in mind:

Donning a never before seen avatar takes a lot of effort by experts. To play the role of a 25 year old FAN - Gaurav Chandna, Shah Rukh Khan went through some rigorous make-up sessions, done by the Hollywood make up genius Greg Cannom. The commendable VFX done by Red Chillies VFX team took his look an altogether new level. Watch how Shah Rukh Khan became the FAN Gaurav.

Hello.
This is my second post regarding my design process research till 17.04.2016.This a part of  Desk research.
The following attached pictures consists of my study on
-The cheapest available air conditioners and coolers on online market place for approximation of my final solution cost.
-The average energy consumption of air conditioners and coolers for knowing the recurring costs of the respective devices.
-Basic study of working mechanism of air conditioners and coolers to see if any of those can be borrowed for my solution.
-Comparison of air conditioners and coolers for knowing the needs that my solution must fulfill.

THIS LAST PICTURE SHOWS THE NEEDS WHICH I NEED TO FULFILL(Marked with a star in air cooler section and those marked with tick should remain unchanged.)
                                                                                                             THANK YOU.

CHALLENGES IN URBANIZATION

CHALLENGES IN URBANIZATION

BASIC DEVELOPMENT OF CITIES AND IMPROVING COMPRIHENSIVE DEVELOPMENT

THE CORE PROBLEM STATEMENT

The core infrastructure elements affecting Urbanization would include:
 i. inadequate water supply,
 ii. Lack of electricity supply,
iii. sanitation problems, including solid waste management,
iv. inefficient urban mobility and public transport
v.non affordable housing, especially for the poor
vi. Lack of IT connectivity and digitalization
vii. Bad governance, especially  no e-Governance and citizen participation
viii.non sustainable environment
ix. safety and security of citizens, particularly women, children and the elderly
 x. health and education.

PROCESS.
INFORMATION SKETCHES AND IMAGES TO BE ADDED.

INITIAL DESIGN PROCESS.

  • Basically to overcome the challenges in Urbanization, Major investments in time and resources will have to be made during the planning phase prior to participation in the Challenge.

  • There is requirement of smart people who actively participate in governance and reforms. Citizen involvement is much more than a ceremonial participation in governance. Smart people involve themselves in the definition of the Urbanization, decisions on deploying Smart Solutions, implementing reforms, doing more with less and oversight during implementing and designing post-project structures in order to overcome the challenges in urbanization.

  • Comprehensive development occurs in areas by integrating the physical, institutional, social and economic infrastructure.

Case Study (depression in old people)

Full case study: link My blog: http://arkaprabhadey.blogspot.in/
Synopsis:

Male retirees experience high levels of satisfaction directly after retirement, but then it falls sharply a few years later.
While employed, men develop a strong routine and many of their friendships come from work, For a lot of guys, when they retire, they lose that social network and social connection … and the meaningful contribution they get out of what they do.
men who have attached their sense of identity and value to their work can become depressed in retirement if they can't successfully transfer that attachment to new interests. Other losses—the death of a spouse or peers, moving away from lifelong attachment to home and friends—often lead to loneliness and sadness. A man confronting a serious illness or signs of mental decline may become depressed by the prospect of dependency. It’s not the job or the money that men miss so much in retirement, but the socialization and self-esteem that work brings
retirement increases the probability of suffering from clinical depression by about 40 per cent. Men also have the highest rates of suicide worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.
Statistics from the U.S.-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show the highest increase in suicide is in men 50 and over, while suicide rates for men are highest among those 75 and older. Men 80 and older are the group with the highest suicide rates in Canada, according to research from the Mood Disorders Society of Canada.
From the age of 2-3 we are following a routine we are all institutionalised. Suddenly at the age of 60 you just can't retire and  live a unplanned life, we can't take that much freedom, we need purpose in life, Some meaning In life and something to look up to, contribute to our society. So imagine at the age of 72 someday you will wake up and feel that  there is nothing that you have to do, the world will go on its way your action doesn't even matter other than just staying alive, your are not  contributing to any one's happiness and you know that you have still 20+ years of meaningless life remaining, Sure you can do whatever you want there is no one to stop you. You maybe have all the money.
But the fundamental source of happiness comes from helping others, making someone else's life better, making them happy.
After retirement you still have 20 to 30 years to live on, And that's a long time to live without any Identity.

Problem assessment matrix

This is the problem assessment matrix done by Janhavi Kulkarni. Plotting the various parameters (only broad categories) are plotted to see whether levels, frequency or severity are more in some pockets linking the two sets of parameters.

To simplify further I tried the following imaginary table:

A quick feedback on progress

I have gone through your blogs. There are mostly general feedback that I have, anything specific I will try to answer it on whatsapp. Some (and quite a few) of you have not uploaded your ongoing work. Please note that blog is like a journal so you maintain it regularly; no matter how rough the work is, put it up. its for you to see.

Here are the feedback:

1. Some excellent work and detailed organized research such as Parth Dhomkar, Part Batavia, Pramod, Roshan, Maria, Aditi, Akkshit, Ritika, Sanjana, viraj, Raghvi- quite a few to name,

2. Some are very basic such as Ayushi, Jishnu and others

3. of course there are who have not posted anything as yet.

General Observations:

1. Most of you are still in the brainstorming and research stage. We need to at least note down the key parameters discovered through research (qualitative and quantitative) and categorize the information under various headings.

2. About your process, you are on the right track. Most of you. A bit of work on the organization of the blog (Prayesh your blog text is going haywire), Check the blogs by your friends. Most of your answers are very much there.

3. Would also like to see a few design process you are referring; post links and images.

4. Some of you have taken photographs and videos for your field research, downloaded stuff from the net; it’s not difficult to upload them. You don’t have wifi use your mobile connections. DO SOMETHING!

Next steps and examples:

This categorization will also help you to know what is the end result that you are visualizing and you can plot it nicely, Check Akkshit's blog. He has tried to visualize the cycles of the problem. This is how you need to visualize the problem area and the design intervention.

This is an exercise to link individual stakeholders (various people who are linked to the problem, their roles and contribution to address the issues) and create a holistic picture of issue and its solutions: how they are linked. It is somewhat like your mental model but much more visual.

This is also possible because you are working with only selected parameters. In the brainstorming phase the parameters are too many and the linkage often are vague so visualization becomes a painstaking process.

Your synthesis, solution sketches needs to be uploaded regularly, only then the blog will make any sense.

Till now great going.

Oh yes, somebody enquired about business model. Even if its campus specific or location specific, it would have a business proposition. Take wastage, even if your solution is better placement of the existing dustbins, somebody will have to clean them, place them in the exact locations- they have to be paid, given uniforms, or outsourced. Business model is the economics of the solution. Sometime may not be a tangible return or profit. If your solution is paved path, you may reduce accidents, that also is a return for the design process.

problems in UG1 curriculum and miscommunication

Step 1 :  BRAIN STORMING
brain storming was about a scenario of ug1. The brain storming was done on what problems students and faculty face in ug1. The idea was to see from both perspective.

Step 2 : DETAILS of those problems
objective was to see the details of the problems

Step 3 : Interconnecting

I took all the problems and tried to see how these problems are interconnected
The objective was to see how problems were interconnected.Once i found a interconnection i was able to research further

Step 4: After looking at the problem which was miscommunication and how Ug1 curriculum can be used to its best, Talking to batchmates, seniors which was a kind of survey process.

Step5: solution

currently  i am working on solution on how to solve miscommunication and use Ug1 curriculum

Step 6: visualization of the problem

I am currently making animation based on a t.v series called south park. In that animation i am trying to show problems a student faces in UG1

Two good resources on Design Process

I have uploaded two documents outlining the various possibilities of Design process. Go through the documents before you look at your own design process and understand how a mental model or a flow chart is arrived at. This is important as you may see some of you are not following a "prescribed Design Process Model"as such:

Green Plug-in

Everyone likes a little plug, and we can’t resist when it actually doubles as a light!

We're all the victims of the grim reality that there aren't enough plug points in the world. As our society  has become so dependent on smartphones, the need to charge the equipment has escalated. Addressing today's digitally connected society and our constant need to recharge our smart phones, laptops, tablets etc. and the demand for new energy, I decided to come up with a lamp that has extra plug points attached to itself and uses energy from soil (not any other plug-in).

This is the basic brief of the idea I have in my mind. I'll be uploading my brain mapping process next, soon.

Update o blog

Diseases in slums (Mumbai) (stage 1)

Initial problem statement-
"Heat problems caused in slums during summer."
After further mapping and analysis,  problem statement diverted to -
"Diseases in slums(Mumbai)."

Four key points:

1) UNHYGIENIC ENVIRONMENT

2) UNHEALTHY FOOD CONSUMPTION

3) INCONVENIENT RESIDENTIAL INFRASTRUCTURE

4) BAD HABITS AND MISBELIEFS.

'Ignorance' is another important factor. Research includes case study which highlights 'ignorant behavior' as the main cause of the discomfort caused.

    Initial mapping.

Metal roofs absorb heat. This can cause dehydration, headaches, etc.

Four major issues that causes diseases

Case study- "Ignorance".

LIQUID PACKAGING

This is my first post of the  Design Process course of semester two.I started with the mind mapping of the things regarding to liquid packaging process. Here is my problem statement,

STATEMENT: Discussing the problems about liquid packaging process and find an alternative solution for it.

The above picture shows the brain mapping of a statement, Liquid Packaging. After brain mapping, I divided the points into some groups which can be linked up together. I divided them by using different shapes.Later, I wrote down some keywords of problems according to them. They are as follows,
1.Problems with soda cup.
2.Economical problems.
3.Environmental problems.

Focusing on these keywords, I did a little survey. Survey lead me to the following points:

  • After using the soda cup, we throw it into a trash which is non-degradable.
  • The lids of these cups  are not stay and put. They easily pops up when the glass gets collapsed.
  • Plastic is not a good conductor of heat so when we put hot coffee in it, it do not insulate heat but the coffee gets cool too fast. As a result, you have to get luke warm coffee.
  • But the cups need to withstand the high temperature and the pressure involved in brewing coffee. So they are tougher and not recyclable.
  • Soda cups can't get microwaved. (by observation)
  • Those are easily bendable and the lids of it doesn't properly fit on the cups.
  • Sometimes liquid gets trapped between the edge of the lid and the rim of the cup.Even if the server wipe it down, it will still leak anyway from the side of the cup.
  • They are not recyclable so they end up in landfills.
  • Used K-Cups, Lafarge cement plant Kamloops B.C.
  • It takes more than 20 years to decompose such plastic which is not good for environment.
  • Its astounding that after decades of 'reduce-reuse-recycle'campaigns, we still accept disposable,non-recyclable or not biodegradable products.
This is my work from 5.4.16 to 13.4.16
I will be posting some remaining points till end of this week.
Thank you!

FIRST POST.

Hello,
This is my first post related to the design process course sem 2.
         PROBLEM(Related to)-     Summers
PROBLEM STATEMENT-Solution for cooling a particular space in summers for the people who can't afford to buy a cooler or an air conditioner.
Only 23% of Indian population can actually afford buy a cooler or an air conditioner and also pay the recurring costs. So,I am working on the a solution which will be both energy efficient and powerful and would have a less amount of investment.
I have done a small amount of desk research which is in the pictures below.
This is my update till 13.04.2016.(Wednesday).
I'll be uploading the work of 14.04.2016(Wednesday)-16.04,2016(Friday) on Friday itself..
         Thank you.

The Fallkirk wheel , Scotland .

The Fallkirk wheel is a Boat lift- machinery that lifts boats from one water level to another.

Boat lifts require hardcore engineering and an enormous power supply. The Fallkirk wheel is  an incredible design solution- its sheer elegance, to the simple principle on which it works  and the best part- all on 1.5kwh of energy.

Thought its worth checking out for all of us .
