Below are the points of discussion/briefing we had today(04.05.2016)
at 1pm in the Foundation Studio
(obviously manipulated with my understanding):
We have to come up with all this Stages:
STAGE 1: Pick up a Scenario and do a Brain
Storming of it.
STAGE 2: Categorize (Mind Mapping)
words/points/thoughts/sketches of Brain Storming. Categorization thought
process will vary in each problem statement…
STAGE 3: Define initial Problem Statement
STAGE 4: Desk Research; Field Research; Dip-Stick
Research
STAGE 5: According to the data/knowledge you
collected in the Research process..make an “Analytical
Matrix”. (If your case requires having more than 1
Analytical Matrix…go for it). Again, the thought process behind creating the 2
categories..each on one axis, i.e. x-axis & y-axis of the matrix will vary
from case to case.
For example:
In case of Jetty..x-axis can be about Parts of Jetty. Y-axis
can be about Materials used in those parts.
In case of Kitchen, x-axis can be like Objects in Kitchen..and
y-axis will be of people (mother, father, children, adolescent, worker)
involved in kitchen.
The Key on basis of which you can link the 2 categories on 2
axis can be based on: Correlation between them/Danger
level/Problem/Economy/Importance, etc.
I have attached my Analytical Matrix.
STAGE 5: Re-Define your initial Problem Statement
STAGE 6: Make a STAKEHOLDER
ANALYSIS. Ok..so Stakeholder analysis is about linking the
different set of users of the Product/System of your Problem Statement. Do this
Analysis by showing sketches and using pointers. Layout the whole chart such
that it is easy to understand which section of the chart is taking about what. Try
to have a hierarchy. (Because no one will
like to look at a 3-4 pages data. Instead they will like to look at a pie chart
of the data.)
Example: Take an example of Bottle. Instead of just looking
at just 2 straight end to end sets that is Company and main user…try to think
who are the people linked with the Economics/Transportation/Service/Marketing/Production/Jobs,
etc of the Product. Like…
^Isn’t Sanjay bhaiya (Helper boy of our foundation class)
linked with it!?. If he don’t deliver the bottles timely to the faculty..then
some faculty might complain about him and he might lose his job.
^Isn’t the child labors at railway stations connected to
bottles!? They collect the thrown out bottles and try to sell it. So their
whole earning is based on this product.
^Isn’t the group which made the model of Stupa out of
bottles in Integrated course were the user of it!? If you guys have noticed…they
used bottles of only 2 types of structure (l/b/h/diameter at different sections).
If they have used bottles of 7-8 companies of different shape and size..they
would have faced much more problem. (They were lucky enough to manage to get
bottles of similar shape and size)
So try to broaden your horizon of thinking of the user of
your Product/System and link them.
While making a layout of users..try to create a hierarchy/flow
of the users considering their involvement/connection with the product/system at
different stages. One of the way is to make number of concentric circles like
bands..and the user which is more connected to the core use..keep him at the
band closed to the center..and the user which is least connected..keep him at
the farthest band.
If you are still confused..then don’t just keep on thinking..just
take a paper and a pencil..and layout whatever your have understood. Post it
and take a feed back. Then on basis of your feedback you will be able to
understand clearly what you need to do.
STAGE 7: VALUE
CHAIN ANALYSIS. This basically deals with the economics of
the whole system. What you need to do is to understand and sketch the whole
Economics and Economics related areas of the Product/System and find the loop
holes in it. This will provide you the scope of your solution and its
by-product.
For example: Where does this idea of Modular Phone comes
from! The basic thought behind the Modular Phones are Customization and Up-gradation.
Microsoft fined this gap and a scope of having a business out of it.
STAGE 8: FEATURE
BUILDING. You also need to look up for the By-Product of
your Process.
For example: If I am designing a Jetty..can’t I say
that..Ok..Can we use it in a candle light dinner! So suddenly..I am linking a
same product from a sport to a restaurant business.
STAGE 9: Solution. Ok it’s not necessary to some
up with. Because what happens that if we are looking for a solution..we might
drag our whole process to come to that solution. This will not allow us to know
and explore the By-Products of the Solution. So focus on Analytical Parts so
that there will be possibility of coming up with Solution and its by-products
both. If you come up with a solution..it’s fine. No one is stopping to do that…but
it’s not necessary at this Foundation year stage.
SUMBISSION:
^ Your blogs are going to be your submission.
^ Keep on uploading your stuffs and the final submission will
be on 20th May, 2015 (Friday).
^ You can also make a 3D model of the Design Process you
followed. Take a paranoma view of the model (by putting paranoma mode on your
camera..holding the camera at fixed position..move/rotate the model in front of
it.) And post it on the blog.
*From next week, individual feedbacks will be given on the
blogs.
